How to Be With Emotions (Without Fixing Them)
I used to run from my emotions like I was running from a house on fire.
Fast. Urgent. Wanting to escape.
Yet no matter how far or how fast I went, they were still there.
If anything, they grew louder, more present, and harder to ignore.
More insistent.
More present.
Harder to ignore.
Until I learned something different.
I learned how to feel them.
Now, emotions move through me like clouds. I notice them, but don’t dwell on them.
They move through, like clouds moving through the sky.
And when I notice my head spinning—when I am caught in thought, analysis, or trying to figure something out—I know what is happening.
There is something in my body that has not yet been felt.
A sensation that has not yet been allowed.
So I go there.
And over time, this is what I have learned—both for myself and for the people I work with:
When we cannot feel something inside ourselves, we often try to shut it down in someone else.
Most of Us Aren’t Feeling—We’re Thinking
Most of us think we are feeling our emotions.
We’re not.
We are:
thinking about them
reacting to them
trying to get rid of them
This cycle—thinking, reacting, resisting—leaves us stuck.
What It Actually Means to Feel an Emotion
To feel an emotion is to return to the beginning:
👉 sensation in my body
Not the label.
Not the story.
Just:
the tightness
the heat
the pressure
This is where the process begins.
The Moment an Emotion Arises
When something is triggered, there is a natural sequence:
sensation appears
emotion is felt
The mind labels it
meaning is added
reaction begins
The body speaks first.
The mind comes after.
Most of us skip the first step.
Skipping sensation is where we lose essential clarity.
The Practice Is Simple (But Not Always Easy)
When I notice an emotion:
Pause.
Bring attention to my body.
Feel:
where it is
what it feels like
how it moves
And do nothing with it.
What Happens When I Stay
When I stay with sensation in my body:
The wave moves
the intensity shifts
my body processes
And then:
👉 clarity returns
Not because I figured anything out.
Because the process is completed.
In Essence
I do not need to fix my emotions.
I only need to:
Feel what is already happening in my body.
Because when I do:
Clarity comes back.
